Psychologist Newcastle: Breakups

Breakups

It is often a difficult life experience. It can be emotionally challenging, as it often involves processing feelings of sadness, anger, and future loss.  For many who have finished the relationship report guilt for the disruption to partner and family.  It is important for individuals to take care of themselves during this time, both emotionally and physically, in order to cope with the process and move forward in a healthy manner. Breakups frequently bring a change to routine, home environment that leaves many feeling overwhelmed. Some may find themselves obsessing and craving their ex partner.

There are many reasons why a breakup happens:

1. Grew apart

2. Arguments

3. Differences to how the future would look

4. Drug or gambling

5. Money problems

6. Finding out about an affair

One of the key aspects of dealing with a breakup is allowing yourself to feel and process the range of emotions that come with it. It can be emotionally devastating for some. Similar to the grief model there are various stages to the grief surrounding the ending of a relationship.  It is important to acknowledge and accept these feelings, rather than attempting to suppress or ignore them. Talking to friends, family members, or a therapist can provide a supportive outlet for processing.

It can be helpful to reflect on the relationship and gain insight into what went wrong and how both parties contributed to its end. This self-reflection can help you learn from the experience and make positive changes in future relationships. It is also important to set boundaries with the ex-partner and avoid contact if necessary in order to allow for healing and closure. This can’t always be done e.g. if you have children or business together. Surrounding oneself with supportive friends and engaging in activities that bring joy and fulfilment can also aid in the healing process.

Ultimately, dealing with a breakup is a process that takes time and effort, but it is possible to come out stronger on the other side. It’s on step forward at a time.
