Clinic takes pride to be relationally focused. This comprises of your relationship with me, outside of therapy and with self. Coming to clinic as a couple can be a significant step for partners looking to address building on their relationship. Here’s what you might expect when you begin this process. We usually arrange a free 15 minute telephone consultation to discuss the needs for your relationships. This is unique to each couple.
Initial Consultation: In the first session, I will meet both of you to understand the reasons for seeking therapy. This includes discussing individual perspectives on the relationship, any specific concerns, and goals for therapy. You will get an introduction to how I work.
Safe Environment: Couples therapy provides a safe and neutral space for open communication. I facilitate the conversation, ensuring both parties feel heard and respected. This can help partners express feelings and concerns that might have been difficult to articulate before.
Identifying Patterns: We work together to identify individual / family and relationship patterns of behaviour or communication that contribute to conflicts. Understanding these patterns can be crucial in breaking cycles that lead to misunderstandings or hurt.
Learning Tools and Techniques: Sessions often include learning practical tools and techniques for better communication, conflict resolution, and emotional expression. Partners may practice these skills during sessions to improve interactions outside of therapy.
Exploring Underlying Issues: Therapy might delve into deeper issues, such as personal histories, family dynamics, or individual stressors that impact the relationship. This exploration can provide insights into how past experiences shape current behaviours.
Regular Check-Ins: As therapy progresses, couples will regularly revisit goals and assess their progress. This helps in recognizing improvements, as well as areas that may still need work.
Emotional Ups and Downs: Expect a range of emotions during the therapy process. Discussing sensitive topics can be challenging and may lead to disagreements or heightened emotions. This is a normal part of the therapeutic journey.
Commitment and Patience: Successful therapy requires commitment from both partners. It may involve challenging conversations and a willingness to change behaviours. Progress can take time, and patience is often necessary.
The ultimate goal of couples therapy is to foster a healthier, more fulfilling relationship. Many couples find that with effort and support, they can develop stronger connections and better understand each other’s needs. Overall, coming to couples therapy is a proactive step towards improving the relationship. While it may require vulnerability and effort, it can lead to deeper understanding, healing, and renewed intimacy between partners.
