December blog 2025

As the holiday season approaches, many people find themselves caught up in the excitement and festivities of Christmas. While the season is often viewed through the lens of joy and celebration, it’s also not always the case. Peoples perfectionism rises, falling into the trap to do it all, saying yes when you might want to say no and stress levels increase. The year saw many changes in clinic life and I feel I too have changed, the only thing constant in life is change. Yet many of us ‘fight’ against it. It’s an important time for reflection as winter solstice arrives. The art of letting go added so much enrichment into my life. Do you ever find yourself holding tight to something or someone? At times this can feel like holding a tight rope and the only person it is harming is you. Take curiosity of one thing you can let go of in 2026 that will make your life more energising for you.

Research has shown that giving can elicit feelings of happiness and satisfaction. The act of giving during Christmas—whether through gifts, time, or acts of kindness—can promote feel good emotions. Engaging in altruistic behaviours can enhance self-esteem and foster social connections, contributing to a sense of belonging and community. Likewise it is important to bring attention to self and needs, not getting burntout and saying no when we require to do so. The act of kindness has to go to self first.

December is often a time for family gatherings and reconnecting with friends. These social interactions are vital for emotional wellbeing. Strong connections with loved ones can provide support, reduce feelings of loneliness, and enhance feelings of love and security. However, it’s also important to recognise that not everyone has positive familial relationships, and for some, this season can bring stress and conflict.

The holiday season often evokes a sense of nostalgia, bringing memories of childhood and past celebrations to the forefront. Nostalgia can have a powerful psychological influence, reminding us of happier times and providing comfort. While nostalgia can enhance mood and promote feelings of connectedness, it can also lead to longing for the past, which may create feelings of sadness in some individuals.

While the holidays can be a time of joy, they can also come with high expectations and pressure—whether it’s for perfect gatherings, ideal gifts, or family dynamics. Stress can arise from financial burdens or trying to meet societal expectations. It’s important to set realistic goals and prioritise self-care to navigate the hustle and bustle without feeling overwhelmed.

In the midst of the busy time, practicing mindfulness and gratitude can significantly enhance our mental health. Taking a moment to reflect on what we’re thankful for can shift our focus from stress to appreciation. Mindfulness can help us stay present in the moment, allowing us to enjoy the little things that make the season special.

Traditions play a crucial role in shaping our holiday experiences. They offer a sense of continuity and belonging, which can be comforting during uncertain times. Engaging in family traditions or creating new ones can foster togetherness and create lasting memories.

As we embrace the winter season, it’s essential to find a balance between celebration and self-care. Understanding the psychological aspects of the holidays can empower us to navigate the season with intention and positivity. Whether it’s through giving, nurturing relationships, practicing gratitude, or establishing healthy boundaries, this holiday season can be an opportunity for connection and joy. Remember, it’s okay to reach out for support if the holidays become overwhelming. Prioritising emotional health is key to enjoying the spirit of Christmas to its fullest.

Wishing everyone a joyful and psychologically enriching holiday season!
